All about the Deer Head Chihuahua
Many people think that a deer head Chihuahua is a breed of dog. But it’s not, there is only one breed of Chihuahua and that is simply a Chihuahua. But a deer head Chihuahua does exist as does an apple head Chihuahua. These are both descriptions of how Chihuahuas can look.
To begin, the Chihuahua is the smallest breed of dog in the world. They are in the category of toy breeds, and average around eight-inches high and two pounds in weight. Chihuahuas are barkers so remember that, especially if you happen to live in an apartment with lots of neighbors around and a Chihuahua is your first choice for a pet. You may not be very popular after your Chihuahua has spent days barking every time one of your neighbors walks by or opens the door to their own apartment.
Chihuahuas originated in Mexico and are named after the Mexican state where they were originally bred. There are two types of variations in Chihuahuas. The first is the coat-either short-haired or long-haired, and the second is the shape of the head. This is where you get the distinction between a deer head Chihuahua and an apple Chihuahua.
As far as coats go, you can have a Chihuahua with a long-haired or a short-haired coat. The long-haired Chihuahua has a coat that can either be curly or flat. He will also have fur around his ears and a long, furry tail. The short-haired Chihuahua has a very smooth-looking coat and an almost hairless tail. The long-haired dog is going to required extra grooming and shed more, so if you have allergies or don’t like vacuuming up dog hair, the short-haired Chihuahua is the breed to choose. Chihuahuas can be brown, black, white, blue, silver or any number of other different colors.
When someone talks about a deer head Chihuahua or an apple Chihuahua, they are talking about the shape of head the dog has. An apple head Chihuahua has a head that looks like an apple and a short nose. The upper part of the head is wide and the lower part or jaw area is narrow, making it look exactly like an apple in shape. There can even be a sunken in area on the top of the skull, like the place where the apple stem originates. This can be visible throughout life or can disappear after puppyhood. Usually the spot disappears as the dog gets older and gains weight. This sunken spot is called a molera, which is Spanish for fontanel.
Technically, a deer head Chihuahua is any Chihuahua that is not apple-shaped. Only the apple-shaped Chihuahua is acceptable to meet the breed standard of the AKC (American Kennel Club). That means a deer head Chihuahua cannot be in the show ring. The deer head Chihuahua has a long nose and ears that reach outward like those of a deer. Many people prefer the look of the deer head Chihuahua to that of the apple head Chihuahua, and if you have no intention of showing, it makes no difference whatsoever.
Because Chihuahuas are so small and have so little fur (even long-haired ones) compared to other dogs, they are not going to be comfortable outdoors unless the temperatures are warm. Chihuahuas are definitely house dogs, and because they are one of the toy breeds, they love to be held, to sit on your lap and to be cuddled. Chihuahuas are very loyal and very feisty. But, despite their small size, they can tend to think they are guard dogs and not be overly friendly with strangers. You need to train Chihuahuas to have good manners because they can be handful if allowed to be disobedient.
There are a couple of things you need to be careful about whether you have an apple head Chihuahua or a deer head Chihuahua. The dogs are so small that their bones are very fragile. Do not let a Chihuahua jump from off of the top of a chair or any other high place. This will undoubtedly result in broken bones as will rolling over on one in bed. Chihuahuas and other toy breeds are not good with children for the very fact that they are too fragile. They can suffer broken bones from just being held too tightly.
