Basic Facts About Shipoo Puppies
Shipoo puppies are a designer dog cross between a purebred Shih Tzu and a poodle. These dogs are commonly bred designer dog crosses and result in a dog that sheds little and are great for allergy sufferers. It should be noted, however, that there is no such thing as a “hypoallergenic” dog. All dogs have dander, which is what allergy sufferers are commonly allergic to, although some dog breeds release less dander than others and they do not shed hair as often. These dogs have medium to long wavy or curly hair, and they may be found in a variety of color combinations.
Designer dog crosses, or hybrid dogs, generally have a short history. This is true of the shipoo, as they are generally bred from two purebred parents. Since the offspring receives only one gene from each parent, recessive genetic disorders that often occur in purebred dogs are limited in hybrid crosses. However, if the hybrids are bred together, then the recessive genetic disorders can reemerge. Therefore, hybrid crosses are often bred only one generation to maintain the vigor of the resulting offspring, which is most often the goal of the cross in the first place.
Designer dog crosses such as the shipoo result in a lot of variability related to the appearance of the offspring. Often, litters of shipoo puppies will have some puppies that look more like one parent than the other, and many of the puppies may not look alike. Some common characteristics seen in shipoos are those characteristics of both parent breeds. Both the Shih Tzu’s and the Poodles have wavy or curly hair that is medium to long in length. The offspring, therefore, will have curly or wavy hair similar in length to the parents. They are small in size, averaging 8 to 11 inches in height at the shoulder and weighing an average of 10 to 15 pounds when fully mature.
Personality And Temperament
In general, shipoo puppies tend to be alert and playful. They are an intelligent dog and do well when they have regular human companionship. They bond with their human family members, and they make good watch dogs due to their instinct to bark at strangers. They are generally easy to train, and they are not usually aggressive towards other animals or people.
Although the shipoos rarely shed, they do require regular grooming to keep their hair from matting. Daily brushing is a must, and many shipoo owners get their dogs clipped regularly in a puppy or poodle clip to keep the grooming maintenance to a minimum. Tearing problems can occur with poodle mixes including the shipoo, so their eyes should be cleaned regularly and checked for infection. The ears should also be cleaned regularly and checked for signs of infection.
As noted above, eye and ear problems sometimes occur in shipoos. However, they are generally regarded as a healthy dog with few of the genetic problems experienced by many purebred dogs. Shipoos can be expected to live for up to 14 years on average.
Shipoos are a good choice of hybrid dog for owners in a variety of settings. They do well living in apartments or in places where they have more room to run. They are great family dogs, as they are generally wonderful with children. They are playful and inquisitive, and they are quick learners. As with all dogs, owners should spend time with their shipoo puppies to socialize them well with kids, the elderly, and other animals. They do require more time and effort in grooming, but they do make sweet and sociable family pets.
