The Truth About The Shitzu Poodle
The Shitzu Poodle, or Shih Tzu Poodle, is one of the most popular of the many poodle crossbreeds. It goes by many other names, including Shih-poo or Poo-shih. It is a mixed breed dog that is a cross between a Shih Tzu and a Poodle.
The appearance and personalities of designer crossbreed dogs can vary depending on the characteristics of the parents. For instance, size can be larger or smaller, depending on whether the poodle parent is a miniature or a toy. The coat can be smooth or curly, and the Shitzu Poodle can come in any color that is in the genetic history of either parent. Because it is not a purebred, but a crossbreed, the Shitzu Poodle is not recognized and cannot be registered with any of the major kennel clubs, such as the AKC.
A Shitzu Poodle normally weighs in the eight to fifteen pound range. Two breeds are bred together to get the cuteness of a Shih Tzu and the intelligence and hypoallergenic qualities of a poodle. The poodle, for instance, is a good dog for people who are allergic to dogs. The crossbreed will have a long coat that will need monthly grooming, but it will shed very little.
The Breeding Controversy
There is a big division between people who breed Shih Tzu Poodles and other crosses of dogs along the same lines, such as crossing a Maltese with a poodle to get a Maltipoo. On one end of the spectrum are the purebred breeders, such as members of the AKC, who believe it is improper to crossbreed. They cite the many unknowns which come from such breeding in terms of temperaments and genetic diseases. The dogs may very well turn out to have twice as many problems as either breed.
Plus, there is always the idea of wanting to buy a mixed breed dog that costs twice as much as a purebred of either breed with excellent and possibly award-winning bloodlines. Critics claim that cross-breeders prey on people who see nothing aside from a cute dog. Many people who buy these puppies think, for instance, that a Shitzu Poodle is a purebred breed because both the Shih Tzu and the Poodle are purebreds. In reality, it is a mixed breed no different than one would find at the local dog shelter.
People who breed cross-mixes, like the Shih Tzu Poodle, claim that crossbreeds simply exhibit the best of both of the parents’ breed. For example, they indicate that the Shitzu Poodle has none of the respiratory problems of the purebred Shih Tzu because a longer nose is the result of the poodle-cross. In reality, your chances are 50/50 of getting a Shitzu Poodle with a short nose like a Shih Tzu or a long nose like a poodle.
The crossing of dogs in the toy breed class can also be troublesome because breeders are seeking to produce smaller and smaller dogs, simply because they think there is a market of people waiting to pay for these cute puppies. Look on the internet and you can find all kinds of breeders claiming to have minis or teacup sizes. The reality is, you can't find a “Teacup Shih Tzu Poodle.” There is no such thing, not even if you pay $1,200 for such a puppy, as many classifieds advertise. When you crossbreed these tiny dogs, you are crossbreeding a dog that is already so little that you can break its bones by simply squeezing it too hard.
A Shih Tzu Poodle puppy is completely adorable and it is no wonder that people’s hearts are touched by the way they look. But, all puppies are cute. So, if you have your heart absolutely set on a Shitzu Poodle, or a poodle crossed with a Maltese, a Pekingese, a Pomeranian or even a Golden Retriever, go ahead and check them out. However, also give it some thought; you might be just as happy with any one of these purebred puppies, who come with guarantees about their genetic lines and health.
